The El Centro Social y Cultural de la Obra Social “la Caixa”
(Social and Cultural Centre) in Lleida offers a wide range of social, cultural and educational activities.
Art, music, literature, philosophy, theatre, dance and cinema coexist with social and educational programmes.
Guided visits to exhibitions, series of conferences, cinema programmes, music festivals, debates,
poetry readings, theatre and dance performances, and educational workshops, are just some of the activities
on offer at the centre, which presents a wide range of possibilities.
The Obra Social de “la Caixa” in Lleida is located in the building that once housed the old Cinema Vinyes and which, at the time of its inauguration, was known locally as the
“la tacita de plata” (the silver coffee cup). It is an Art Nouveau building dating from 1915 and was constructed by the architect
Francesc de Palau Morera Gatell. The Fundació “la Caixa” (“la Caixa” Foundation) acquired and
renovated the building in 1985 to use it as its local headquarters. Today, it is included in the catalogue of
interesting local buildings. At present, after two sets of modifications, carried out in 1997 and 2004, the
Centre has an exhibition centre, a hall in which works of modern art have been exhibited for the last ten
years, an auditorium with capacity for 240 people and two assembly halls each seating 50 people. The cinema
still has its place in this building, keeping alive the memory of the former Cinema Vinyes, with film
programmes, shows and festivals that have made it a key reference for the cinema goers of Lleida.
