Poblet is the largest occupied Cistercian monastery in Europe and was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1991; a distinction awarded to only a very select few of the world's monuments and areas.

Poblet was closely related to the Crown of Aragon. It was founded in the year 1150 and the monks abandoned the monastery in 1835, following the disentailment of Mendizábal. But in 1940 the monastery was reopened and work began to restore and protect the building.
