Roman Iesso - Guissona

The ancient Roman town of Iesso, mentioned by the classic authors Pliny the Elder and Ptolemy, is identified with the archaeological site conserved at the town of Guissona (la Segarra - Spain).

Iesso was founded around the year 100 B.C., making good use of the natural resources of the Guissona plain: water in abundance and the easy agrarian exploitation of the nearby lands. For more than seven centuries this town developed with an important level of construction and commercial activity.

The current state of investigation reveals that the Roman town of Iesso is walled and forms a polygonal plot with an area of 15ha. and 18 ha., with a regular urban layout characterised by an orthogonal network of streets, in accordance with the models of Roman towns of the epoch.
